For Patients with Brackets

Today, brackets have been bonded to the tooth surface to hold the archwire in place. These appliances move the teeth into ideal position, making your super-smile come true!

About discomfort and pain

On the day brackets have been set, patient may experience discomfort or pain at night. The level of discomfort and pain depends on the patient. However, it will disappear in three days to a week at the longest.
For pain and discomfort relief, please try the following:

  1. Brush the teeth thoroughly at least twice a day, taking 5 to 10 minutes each.
  2. Rinse with warm salt water, massage the gum with fingers, or chew more often. This will improve blood circulation and reduce discomfort and pain.
  3. Eat soft food such as noodles and loose steamed rice when pain worsens.
  4. Canker sore may result from brackets and wires sinking inside the cheek or touching the lip. When this happens, use wax to reduce the soreness and keep your mouth clean to avoid infection.

Things to keep in mind at each meal

Use of fixed appliances and brackets is limited only to the purpose of orthodontic treatment and they will be removed completely when the treatment is finished. For this reason these appliances will come off when put on a large force or pressure. Please keep the following things in mind when it's time to eat:

  1. Please do not eat hard foods such as whole apples, hard crackers and breads, unless cut into wedges or broken into bite-size pieces.
  2. Please avoid sticky foods such as caramels and gum.
  3. Because brackets are delicate appliances, please use both left and right teeth when chewing.
  4. Curry and strong coffee stain on the appliances, however, it does not affect the treatment.
